It is now mid-January and we can safely say it hasn’t been the powder-filled start to the season we enjoyed last year. However, the season is still long and there have been other years like this with big dumps arriving later on in the season. The good news is that the snow is still very good above Ruinettes and the conditions are holding up well further down into Verbier. A new front of snowfall just arrived tonight and brought in approximately 10 centimetres already.
The forecast for the long term looks very promising. Later on this week we will get some extra snowfall and the maps show even more fresh snow arriving into next week.
Avalanche risk
If you are planning to go off-piste, please be aware that the layers in the snowpack are very weak this season and the avalanche risk is still very high. In the Swiss Alps, 2013-2014 has been the deadliest start to a ski season in 15 years. If you would like to do some off-piste ski touring, make sure you go with a certified instructor, contact our off-piste ski school Freeride Verbier for more details.
