Verbier has more than 500 kilometers of hiking trails. Today we would like to highlight one of our favourite hikes to the Cabane Panossière (2.645m). This mountain refuge is situated at the foot of the 10km long ‘Glacier de Corbassière’ and the Grand Combin (4.314m). The cabane is accessible for a day trip or you can stay overnight if you wish to have a real alpine adventure.
Hiking to Cabane Panossière
There are many different routes towards Cabane Panossière. If you wish to do it as a day trip, then we definitely recommend that you drive up to Cabane Brunet (2.103m) and then it is only a 2h50mins hike up to the cabane. This hike is beautiful and offers spectaculars views. There are two routes, the ‘Maye’ and the ‘Col des Avouilons’. The shorter and easier route is the ‘Maye’ option. There is also an impressive suspension bridge for hikers with a length of 210 meters and height of 70 meters, the ‘Passerelle de Corbassière’. After passing the bridge there is another 45 mins left to hike up to the Cabane.
Another route you can take starts from Fionnay (1.490m). This route takes approximately 3h30mins and takes you along the ‘Bisse de Corbassière’ up to the cabane. This route contains 1.200 meters vertical ascent and is more challenging than the Cabane Brunet version.
Cabane Panossière mountain hut
When you arrive at the Cabane you can enjoy the impressive view overlooking the ‘Glacier de Corbassière’. The mountain hut staff are very friendly and you can enjoy lunch, including a traditional fondue. If you wish to stay overnight we would recommend you to book in advance. Costs are CHF 70,- per night for adults and prices for children are cheaper. The price includes an evening meal (soup, main course, dessert), a bed in a dormitory (please take a simple cotton sleeping bag as well) and breakfast. Food quality is basic as cabanes are only supplied by helicopters.
Le Tour des Combins
Cabane Panossière is also located on the ‘Tour des Combins’ route, a 6 day hiking trip around the Grand Combin through Switzerland and Italy. Hikers stay in different cabanes along the route in Switzerland and hotels in Italy. This route is for advanced hikers who are in good physical condition.
